The Barsby Bulldogs had a rough opening to their 2013 JV football exhibition season losing 20-0 to the Valleyview Vikings out of Kamloops at John Barsby Community School on Thursday.
The Bulldogs had trouble getting much going against a physically imposing Vikings team, but head coach Matt Heinrichs said it was no real excuse.
"We're getting used to being the smaller team, it's kind of a running theme for us the last couple of years," he said.
Their biggest issues were more the mental side of the game, things that can be corrected in practice Still there were some big positives to build on for the Island powerhouse.
"The O-line was starting to jive really well, our defence was pretty much there" said Heinrichs.
Another bright spot for them to build on is the play of is the play of defensive lineman Doyle Sosnowski who had several big stops on defence, including blocking an extra point attempt on the Vikings last touchdown.
Up next for the Bulldogs is a showdown with intercity rival, the Nanaimo District Secondary School Islanders on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Barsby.
