The North Island Silvertips are in a frustrating start-and-stop rut.
Every weekend they have seen how good they can be, but then they also showcase the other side.
For the third straight week, they split have their weekend B.C. Major Midget Hockey League series - beating the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs 5-3 on Saturday, but losing 6-0 on Sunday.
On Saturday, they got goals from Tyler Madden, Nik Malenica, Hunter Findlater, Trent Bell and Bo Lewis, while rookie John Hawthorne picked up the win in net, making 30 saves.
In Sunday's shutout loss, Liam Young stopped 22 shots.
"We need to get guys focused on each game as a new game, we cannot rest on what you did the day before," said North Island head coach Jason Dubyna.
On Sunday, they just could not convert their opportunities, especially early on when they were playing well. The Chiefs slowly started to build, leading 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after the
second. By the time the final frame rolled around, the 'Tips just could not turn the momentum back around.
"It just seemed like we didn't get better as the game went on," said Dubyna.
"(The Giants) played pretty hard the whole game against us. We didn't bring our game up as the game went on, we just kept it in a consistent cruise control, we
The Silvertips do have a lot of positives to build off of, however. They are fifth in the BCMMHL, just two points out of first, heading into Sunday's action, and are the only team to beat the defending champions Vancouver Northwest Giants so far this year.
"It's early still for us. The guys are learning the intensity they need to bring every game," said
Dubyna. "This is a snapshot of why we have to be prepared every game. We're happy we got two points out of the weekend and we have to build on it."
Up next for North Island is a two-game set against the Kootenay Ice at the Nanaimo Ice Centre this Saturday at 5:15 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Getting four points will be extremely important to building momentum to go forward.
"Going against a team that has been in the bottom of the league the last couple of years, it's important for us to come out and play strong for the two games and get a sweep," said Dubyna.
