The Nanaimo District Secondary School Islanders (1-2-0) were defeated by the Windsor Dukes by a score of 40-7 in AA Varsity play at Merle Logan Field on Friday afternoon.
Scoring for the Islanders was Brendan Mattes, who ran a kick return for 80 yards to the end zone.
"We knew Windsor was a good football team, it wasn't a matter of stopping them, just slowing them down," said head coach Nate Stevenson. "We didn't do so hot." Windsor was up 19-7 just before the halfway mark with the Islanders within reach of adding another touchdown before play ended.
The Dukes came back hungry to the third quarter and recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff to score quick.
Another quick Dukes touchdown "kind of broke our back," said Stevenson.
Thomas Eytcheson had 10 tackles for the Islanders and Jeremie Cheng had nine.
The Islanders went five for 10 on passing attempts for a total of 61 yards. Their rushing game made good on 11/73 attempts.
Marko Keith had six tackles and one sack for the Islanders.
