The Nanaimo Buccaneers look almost unstoppable.
They beat the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 8-3 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre on Thursday to improve to 6-0-0-0 in their second Vancouver Island Junior B Hockey League season.
The Buccaneers were led by Will McNamara (two goals, two assists) and Lee Orpen (1-3-4) with four-point nights. Garrett Dunlop scored twice and Riel Gibson, Noah Russi and Chad Bell added singles. Alex Mastrodonato finished with 13 saves for the win. Duncan Pernal, Liam Shaw and Grant Iles responded for the Glacier Kings and Bryce Di Rocco made 28 saves in the loss.
Right now, it's not so much that the Buccaneers are still perfect, they are blowing everyone out.
"We're going to get beat one day, it's just a matter of time," said Bucs head coach Brad Knight. "We're not going to run the table, nor are we tying to run the table, it's just the way it's going right now."
The Glacier Kings did have a chance to get back in the game, down 4-3 at the start of the third period and a two-man advantage, but failed to score. The Bucs then rolled to four more goals to finish out the game.
"Last year we used to outplay teams and we couldn't score a goal if our life depended on it, it's just nice to see the puck go in the net for some kids," said Knight.
The Buccaneers are in Victoria to play the Kerry Park Islanders on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
