A 13-year-old girl is dead after being struck by two cars on Highway 1 early Sunday.
Mounties say the teenager was crossing the road with a group of friends at the Boyd Road intersection in North Cowichan around 3 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle headed north.
Cpl. Krista Hobday said the driver got out of his vehicle to help the girl, who was in considerable pain but conscious. Moments later, a second northbound vehicle changed lanes in attempt to avoid the teen, and hit her a second, fatal, time.
The second vehicle then hit another victim, an 18-year-old man, who sustained serious injuries and was taken to Cowichan District Hospital. Hobday said no names will be released until family is notified.
Neither driver had immediate injuries and initial investigations suggest neither had been drinking alcohol or speeding. Mounties are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.
