Efforts to rebuild Nanaimo District Secondary School have taken a small step forward.
The Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district announced on Wednesday that they had retained the services of an urban planning consultant firm to launch the first phase of a master planning process.
The district proposed a rebuild of the school this summer with the approval of their 10-year facilities plan.
The concept included the relocation of NDSS students to Woodlands Secondary before a new facility opens in the fall of 2017.
The process will include proposals for a new NDSS and an analysis of the site for opportunities and possible challenges.
Also expected in the first phase are discussions related to construction phases and how to integrate other facilities, like the Aquatic Centre, into the planning.
The district estimated that the master planning process could take between eight and nine months at a cost of $47,000 for the first two phases.
