Vancouver Island University business students have a message for Nanaimo businesses: hire local.
Third-and fourth-year students are sending a callout to both first-year VIU students and businesses, encouraging them to connect before the Vancouver Island Leadership Conference in October.
Fourth-year accounting student, and co-chairwoman of VILC, Navjit Sangha said she wants Nanaimo businesses to contact her because VIU students are eager to work and make connections within the city. She also said many students aren't aware of opportunities in Nanaimo and move away after school is done.
"Students are here looking for employment and we are wanting to stay here," said Sangha.
We're looking for connections."
VIU Faculty of Management Area chairwoman Tracy Gillis said she also wants to see businesses connect with Nanaimo students.
"We have the grads for local businesses," she said. "That hundred-mile diet - you can have zero-mile, or zero-kilometre, hiring."
Sangha said businesses can get in touch with opportunities by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. The VILC takes place Oct. 25 and 26, and VIU business students host a networking event Sept. 25.
