An overturned canoe that instigated an exhaustive missing person search at the Colliery Dams when it was found in the water Saturday has been accounted for by an anonymous caller.
RCMP Sgt. Carl Vinet said Mounties got a call Sunday morning from a man who said he found the canoe with two friends.
They decided to take the boat on the water and tipped it over, swimming safely to shore but abandoning the canoe. Vinet said the man called from a payphone and wouldn't identify himself.
Officers currently have no information suggesting a missing or drowned person, but on Saturday, when the canoe was found overturned with a paddle, hiking boots and containers of alcohol, RCMP were prompted to call Nanaimo Search and Rescue and
extensively search the area.
RCMP Const. Gary O'Brien said the search could have been prevented if the incident was reported.
"Twelve highly trained volunteers spent their entire Saturday searching when it was not necessary," he said.
Police ask anyone who has information about the owners of the canoe to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
