The City of Nanaimo is moving forward with plans to lessen the red tape and costs for businesses who operate in several in central Vancouver Island municipalities.
After years of review and research, city council will consider a motion calling for the adoption of an inter-municipal mobile business licence program that would allow businesses to work in up to 12 Island communities who are also expected to participate in the initiative.
Businesses from Nanaimo would be required to attain a business licence from the city and a second mobile business licence that would permit them to operate in any of the other participating jurisdictions.
Businesses from the other participating municipalities would have to buy the mobile licences in the community they live in.
The city's development director Toby Seward said the mobile business licence initiative, which is being increasingly used in other parts of the province and is being endorsed by the provincial government, will make it easier for many businesses who work in multiple municipalities to operate on the Island.
He said 12 municipalities from Duncan to Campbell River who are also in the process of introducing the new mobile licensing system are co-ordinating to try to have it in place by Jan. 1.
"There has been lots of discussion about this over the years and representatives from the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce recently spoke to council about its implementation in Nanaimo," Seward said.
"Currently, businesses like roofing companies who work in a number of communities need different business licences to operate in each one, so the introduction of the mobile business licences would be a much more straight forward and less complicated system for them."
Seward said that along with the province encouraging Nanaimo and other municipalities to adopt the mobile business licensing system, it has also placed a research specialist at the city's disposal who has been studying the current status of the city's business licensing procedures and the revenue they create.
