The Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation is adding a new staff member to help cope with an increasing workload, according to CEO Sasha Angus.
The position, manager of tourism operations, will oversee Tourism Nanaimo and would report directly to Angus.
The NEDC has hired Chemistry Consulting to gather a field of candidates for a hiring committee to sort through and vet. The application date closes today.
Angus said the NEDC hopes to make a selection and have the new manager in place by mid-October.
Angus said the position is being added in response to an increased number of to-do items laid out in the Tourism Nanaimo strategic plan released earlier this year, such as developing new tourist attractions and marketing for the region.
"There's just not enough hours in the day," he said. Staff members already sometimes work up to 60 hours a week, he added.
Angus added the extra help will also free up more time for him to pursue other projects and investments for the region.
Angus declined to specify how much the new manager would be paid, since a salary will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
But he said Chemistry has put together a package with a range of salaries and benefits that are "appropriate but not excessive."
