Sony Mehta, owner of Chico's Fried Chicken & Pizza on Bowen Road, said he was "overwhelmed" when James MacIntyre offered his services to assist in refurbishing his restaurant.
Mehta said MacIntyre and his staff at nearby Studio Kitchens & Design Ltd. are longtime customers at his restaurant and the company decided to step in when Mehta was having financial troubles with plans to renovate the front of the 25-year-old business and reorganize the kitchen. Mehta said he has owned Chico's for more than five years, but it was run by a hired manager and he only recently decided to become more actively involved in the restaurant. He said that despite the ongoing popularity of Chico's chicken and other offerings, the business has been struggling recently so MacIntyre's offer to help with renovations is "like a dream."
The restaurant will close for the weekend on Sept. 20 and staff from Studio Kitchens & Design will spend the next two days doing all the required work, free of charge, with the restaurant reopening on the morning of Sept. 23.
MacIntyre bought Northfield Road's Studio Kitchens & Design Ltd., along with its sister company PI Granite Fabricators Ltd., in 2011.
MacIntyre said one of the guiding principles of his professional life is that businesses should help other businesses, and seeing as he and his staff have been enjoying the food at Chico's for some time, helping Mehta with his renovations fit the bill.
He said that while the work will cost him thousands of dollars, he's more than willing to lend a hand.
"I have the time and materials to offer, and we've already been busy measuring and cutting the materials we'll need," MacIntyre said. "I'm more than happy to help out where I can."
