Set up your easels, polish your lenses and get ready to capture a piece of Nanaimo's heritage.
Registration is opening for the 2013 'Heritage Paint Out Shoot Out' event, which will allow artists and photographers the chance to compete to best capture one of the city's heritage buildings and win a prize to boot.
The annual contest takes place on Sunday, Sept. 15. Participants will meet at Nanaimo Museum at 10 a.m. and draw a randomly selected heritage building located within the city.
They will have until 3 p.m. that day to paint and photograph their assigned building and location. Once the strike of three hits, the artists must return to the museum to present their work to judges Marianne Turley and Christine Meutzner, who will select a winner from the bunch. First prize is $125, second is $75 and the third-place entrant gets $50. Organizer Sarah Schmidt, manager of the Nanaimo Arts Council, said the contest is a unique combination of photography, painting and heritage.
The contest first began in 1999 out of the Nanaimo Art Gallery, and was later adopted by the NAC, which in turns partners with the museum and the city's community heritage commission to host the event.
Schmidt said the event has seen contestants get creative over the years. One artist snapped a photo of a building, and then added creative flourishes with paint later, she said.
Registration forms can be found online at nanaimoartscouncil.ca and dropped off at the Nanaimo Art Gallery. The cost is $10 for NAC members and $12 for members of the public, Participants must provide their own materials.
Business licence change City council will vote Monday on whether to give preliminary approval for a new, inter municipal business licence with 12 other Vancouver Island local municipalities.
City staff are recommending that a bylaw to establish the policy be given the first three readings, followed by final adoption on Oct. 7. The business licence program would allow businesses that operate within multiple jurisdictions to operate by applying for one, common licence.
