The Nanaimo Nusa'Lon Dragons boating team is heading to the Canadian National Dragon Boating Championships after bringing home a bronze metal from the Victoria Dragon Boat Festival over the weekend.
The all-women team of 23 will race in the "senior B" category, for ages 49+, in hopes of being invited to the 2014 Club Crew World Championship in Ravena, Italy.
Holly Wylie, a Nusa'Lon Dragons stroke seat rower who also manages the Nanaimo Paddling Centre, said training for nationals has been a "two-year adventure."
"There's a passion involved," she said.
"Its all teamwork out there. We all need to think as one. Paddle as one."
Wiley said her team, coached by her husband Bob, will compete in three different race divisions: 200-metres, 500-metres and 2000-metres, and will need to be in the top five in each race in order to move up.
She is confident her team will make it to worlds.
The Gorging Dragons team out of Victoria - in the "senior" category and already boasting 21 medals - is also competing in nationals.
Gorging Dragons coach Tom Arnold said he has two team members from Nanaimo who commute to Victoria twice weekly for practices.
The Canadian National Dragon Boating Championships will take place from Aug. 23 to 25 at Elk Lake in Victoria.
