There are several questions to which I think council should demand answers regarding the Duke Point incinerator proposal.
Is it ethical for one city to dispose of its waste in another one? How environmentally responsible is it to barge garbage from Vancouver to Duke Point, given all the emissions that process will generate? If the exhaust from the proposed facility will be as innocuous as they claim, why don't they built the facility in Vancouver? If jobs are going to be created by the project, why doesn't Vancouver want them? Similarly, if there is money to be made by generating electricity, why does Vancouver want to give it away? If Burnaby finds it beneficial to burn its own waste, why wouldn't Vancouver? Clearly there is more to this proposal than meets the eye, and council has to find out what the downside is before agreeing to anything.
