Auditions open next week for an all-new educational program and show featuring Rick Scott.
The veteran children's performer and award winning singersongwriter joins the Vancouver Island Symphony to provide an opportunity for Grade 5 students across the district who love to sing.
Auditions will be held on Oct. 10 and Oct 12 in preparation for the three-part integrated music education program.
It runs in a partnership between the VIS and the Island's three school districts, including Nanaimo-Ladysmith.
In February, for the first time ever, all Grade 4 students from these districts will be attending a performance by the Vancouver Island Symphony.
Grade 5 students in the district will be given the opportunity to participate in the honour choir at the performance and parents are encouraged to call the symphony to set up an audition time.
In addition, the VIS will be sending a musician to perform at each elementary school prior to students attending the new education show, called "My Symphony." "Kids in Grade 5 are invited to come and have fun" said choir conductor Patricia Plumley.
"They can audition with a group of friends or come on their own."
Plumley said that right after the auditions, rehearsals begin once a week in preparation for extra outreach concerts.
"These will help the new choir get performance experience ready for the big show in February. We'll start singing, dig in, and see what unfolds," she said.
Participants in the Grade 5 honour choir will perform with Scott while Pierre Simard conducts the orchestra.
For more than 35 years, Scott has performed in schools, festivals and concert halls around the world.
This weekend, Scott flies to Calgary for the Western Canadian Music Awards where his musical audio novel The Great Gazzoon is nominated for Children's CD of the Year, along with his partner Valley Hennell, who was nominated for the 2013 Canadian Folk Music Awards as Producer of the Year.
Besides singing in My Symphony, the Grade 5 choir will also perform at community events and in Nanaimo BAR NONE, a showcase of Nanaimo's supreme sumptuous talent being staged in May, 2014. For information and to book an audition, call 250-754-0177 or go to www.vancouverislandsymphony.com.
