VANCOUVER - More than 50 employers around B.C. face a total of nearly $540,000 in fines for workplace violations.
WorkSafeBC imposed four penalties connected to fatal incidents and six fines were placed on companies whose workers were seriously injured.
One of the largest penalties went to Fraser Richmond Soil & Fibre Ltd., which was fined almost $58,000 when it failed to develop and implement a plan to prevent workers being exposed to asbestos within a reasonable time.
A penalty of more than $57,000 went to H.P. Construction for a December 2010 building site accident in Vancouver, where a wall form fell, killing a worker.
In Dawson Creek, D. Loewen Enterprises was fined $47,000 after a worker was killed when he was hit by a bulldozer.
In what's considered a high-risk violation, Abbott Shoring & Foundations Ltd. was fined almost $32,000 after workers who were drilling made contact with a utility line after failing to check that it was there.
