A five-year-old girl is in hospital after being struck by a car along Wakesiah Avenue on Friday morning.
The child, a student in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district, was walking with her mother and a sibling when she bolted into the road and ran into traffic where she was hit by a car, said the Nanaimo RCMP in a statement.
The vehicle was being driven by a 27-year-old woman, who is co-operating with police investigators.
Speed and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the incident, and no charges are expected.
B.C. Paramedics were on the scene of the accident, which took place between First and Second Streets along Wakesiah Avenue, and quickly transported the child to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
She is currently being treated for possible internal injuries and a broken pelvis.
Victim services have been offered to both the mother of the youngster and driver of the vehicle.
