The Snuneymuxw First Nation's Alexander Thomas is one of a handful of students to receive a scholarship for aboriginal students from the Royal Bank of Canada.
RBC announced Thomas as one 10 students who will receive scholarships under the 2013 RBC Aboriginal Student Awards Program, which will award up to $4,000 a year for a maximum four years to help cover the cost of school.
Thomas is currently enrolled at Nova Scotia's Acadia University, where he is pursuing a bachelor of science degree.
He will also be playing varsity basketball for the Acadia Axemen this fall.
"At a young age, it was clear to Alex's math teacher that he was a bright student that was keen on understanding mathematical concepts rather than memorizing the steps," a statement says. "He has always tried to be a positive role model for the Aboriginal community and for his younger brother. He believes this scholarship will assist him in doing just that as well as help him pursue his dream of attending university."
