The 18-year-old woman critically injured in a crash by an alleged drunk driver on Bowen Road Friday night was the designated driver responsible for getting her friends home safe.
Jasmine Bussiere, a student in the culinary arts program at Vancouver Island University, is in critical condition at Victoria General Hospital, in an induced coma and suffering from internal injuries.
She was driving four of her friends home from an all-ages concert Friday night. when her Hyundai Accent was struck by a Dodge Intrepid at the intersection of Bowen and East Wellington roads.
Bussiere's boyfriend, Tyson Cook, runs a production company that sometimes puts on concerts to raise money for Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.
He said he couldn't say more about the crash because the families are dealing with lawyers. The 19-year-old driver of the Intrepid was arrested and found to have a blood alcohol level well over the legal limit, said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O'Brien.
He is facing charges relating to impaired driving and was released on a promise to appear in court Jan. 21.
Video surveillance from a gas station at the intersection show the Intrepid travelling at a high rate of speed before hitting the driver's side of the Hyundai.
"It was considerable speed for that road and time of night," O'Brien said.
