Lakeside Gardens Retirement Community is planning a 'Silver Fox Run' - although many will walk or roll - for residents the same weekend as the Terry Fox Run in Nanaimo.
Participating seniors, residents of Lakeside Gardens are age 85 on average, will take a lap around the Lakeside Gardens building on Saturday at 11 a.m. to raise money for the Terry Fox foundation. Activity co-ordinator Vicki Podetz said six people have already pledged money, but she expects most will make their pledges, and decide whether or not to participate, the day of the event. She hopes to raise a couple hundred dollars for cancer research.
"It's more of a symbolic participation," Podetz said.
"Our residents are older and probably many of them have friends and family that have
been affected by cancer (or experienced it themselves)."
Podetz is encouraging residents to recruit friends and family to do the walk with them.
Lakeside Gardens resident Nita Chappell said she will be thinking of many people as she walks. "It's a good cause," she said. "I don't think there's anyone here that doesn't have someone they'll be thinking of."
Another resident, Gladys Grey, said she plans on pledging money and will be walking on behalf of family members.
"I think it's a wonderful thing," said Grey.
"Terry Fox did so much for us. We should show our support."
Nanaimo's Terry Fox run will take place the next day, Sunday Sept. 15 at Bowen Park.
Registration is at 9 a.m. and the run is at 10 a.m.
