The Save Cedar Schools group hopes some answers will be provided at Wednesday's meeting of the local school board as to why the decisions were made in the spring to close Cedar Secondary School and a number of elementary schools in the area.
Spokesman Steve Rae said the group expects Dave Hutchinson, superintendent of the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District, to provide the rationale behind the decisions, what data the district used in the process, the costs that were assessed to keep Cedar Secondary and the others schools in place and other answers related to the controversial decisions.
Rae said the Save Cedar Schools group intends to make a formal presentation to the school board at its next regular meeting in September.
The group will also hold a town hall meeting in their community prior to that in which the public will be invited to share their thoughts and concerns and how they want to see the school board to respond to them.
School board chairman Jamie Brennan said trustees hope to have answers to the group's questions answered publicly even before Wednesday's board meeting.
Brennan said he has personally received many emails and letters from people concerned about Cedar's schools during the summer, but the board made a decision months ago that all trustees must be involved in the responses.
He said that as this is the first board meeting since the early summer, all the correspondence will be dealt with by the board and all will be answered individually.
"At least the board has finally decided to acknowledge our concerns with its decisions regarding our schools," Rae said of the district's decision to publicly answer some of the pertinent questions.
"We see our town hall meeting as an attempt on our part to conduct real and meaningful consultations on this issue, unlike the district which only held one meeting in Cedar and provided no real answers."
As part of the district's newly adopted 10-year facilities plan, the board decided to close Cedar Secondary School in June, 2014, with its students given the choice of transferring to either John Barsby or Ladysmith secondary schools.
