Tania Wheatley has been getting up each morning at 4 a.m. for 20 years to ensure the customers at her restaurant receive the great breakfasts they have become accustomed to.
Wheatley is the owner of the popular Tania's Restaurant, located on Departure Bay Road behind Country Club Centre, which specializes in home-made breakfast and lunch offerings.
She said the business has been a learning experience for her since she took it over from its previous owners in 1993, when it was a pizza and pasta restaurant.
Wheatley was working at the restaurant as a waitress at the time and saw a huge opportunity for herself and the business.
She said she took what she knew of the food industry and determined there was a need for a restaurant that offered quality breakfasts and lunches in the area. Wheatley said she conferred with Bob Bruce, the restaurant's manager and chief cook for the past 19 years, and decided that home-made hash browns, eggs Benedict sauce and other unique breakfast items could be the secret to success and she has not looked back.
"It's an awesome business and it has just seemed to evolve naturally to get to the point where we are today," Wheatley said while cleaning up after a busy serving on Tuesday. "It's tough having to get up early each morning but it's also very rewarding in that we have a lot of customers who come here regularly and it's great to see and talk to them. We tend to stick to what we know and that seems to be working out well."
Wheatley said she expanded the business to an downtown location 11 years ago, which lasted five years before she decided that the original location was enough. She said, on top of the increased competition in the downtown core, the main business at the second restaurant was in the evenings, which added even more time to her already busy days.
Wheatley said she plans to reward her customers on Oct. 20, the 20th anniversary of her restaurant, with prizes during the day, including the grand prize of a 37-inch television.
