The new Canadian Tire store at Nanaimo North Town Centre will officially open at 8 a.m. on Friday.
Owner Carl Head said the former Canadian Tire location at Dickinson Crossing closed last Friday and his staff of approximately 150 employees have been working 24 hours a day since then to assure that the new store will be ready to serve customers on Nov. 1. Head commended Vancouverbased Morrison Construction for completing its ambitious sixmonth building schedule on the new 132,000 square-foot building, which is approximately 30,000 square-feet larger than the old location, on time with no delays or problems.
Canadian Tire decided last year to move to new and bigger location that is more central in Nanaimo in order to meet the needs of a growing city.
Canadian Tire's decision to open the new and larger location at the NNTC is the latest development in the mall's ongoing renewal, which includes the addition of London Drugs, Fairway Market, a new Tim Hortons location and a renovated Sears location in recent years.
"The store is more modern and has more space and products than the previous location," Head said in his head office Tuesday as he watched his staff busily preparing for opening day through his new full-length office windows.
"We have all the same departments that we had, just bigger, and we're looking to expand our hunting and fishing product lines in the new store. The head office feels that the new location should be able to handle the needs in Nanaimo for now and there are no plans for another store at this time."
Head brings lots of experience to the transition of Nanaimo's Canadian Tire store.
He has owned six Canadian Tire locations across Canada over the last 36 years and has been involved in two major moves similar to the move in Nanaimo.
While no major sales are planned to coincide with the store's Friday opening, Head reminded customers that the sales advertised last week at the old store will continue in the new location.
"It's a great relief to get this project completed with no major issues," he said.
"It all came together on schedule and we can't wait to take a breather after all the work that was put in. We do plan to have a grand opening and we'll announce those plans at a later date."
Cabela's Canada announced plans last week to establish a new location in the former Canadian Tire building at Dickinson Crossing.
Cabela's Incorporated is a leading specialty retailer and the world's largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise.
Cabela's plans to transform its newest location in Nanaimo, which is the first for the chain in B.C., into a 50,000-square-foot store.
Construction is expected to begin next year and Cabela's anticipates to open the Nanaimo store in the fall of 2014.
