A speaker series coming to Nanaimo next week is using education to dispel harmful effects of stereotyping and racism against immigrants and Indigenous Canadians.
The free multicultural speaker series will run every Wednesday evening next month, starting Oct. 2. Guest speakers from different parts of the world will speak about their experiences in their country of origin each night. The speakers come from Ethiopia, Egypt, Somalia, Columbia, Iran/Iraq, Israel, China and Canadian First Nations.
Guests on Oct. 2 will be Zakary Myers, who will speak about what it's like being an aboriginal man in contemporary times, and Safwat Mentias, who will talk about recent tumultous events in Egypt.
The series takes place Oct. 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Nanaimo Rugby Club.
