An accident sidelined the Gabriola Island ferry for one sailing on Monday.
A ferry worker was knocked out by a blow to the head from a fall, while climbing stairs on the MV Quinsam. It happened just as the ship sailed. The ship returned to the dock for the emergency. The man, whose name was not released, was still recovering in hospital Tuesday.
"Just after the ship departed Nanaimo Harbour for its 3:45 p.m. scheduled departure, an employee who was walking up the stairs from the main car deck to the crew area fell backwards and hit his head," said Deborah Marshall, B.C. Ferries spokeswoman, by email.
"He did lose consciousness for a period of time."
An ambulance was called and during the wait a nurse and a paramedic who happened to be on board tended to him.
The employee "was conscious when he left the vessel." He was taken by ambulance to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
An inspection of the area where the employee feel by B.C. Ferries "did not find any deficiencies," Marshall said.
