They might not have hair, but they need a little extra love.
The SPCA is looking for help to pay for expensive surgery for the three Russian Peterbald cats and four Chinese Crested dogs - both typically hairless breeds - surrendered from a Nanaimo home as a result of an ongoing cruelty investigation.
All the animals have severe dental disease and most need full dental extractions, while several also need knee surgery.
The total bill is close to $6,000. Nanaimo SPCA manager Leon Davis said the shelter's medical budget is already stretched.
He sees 60 to 80 animals coming in every month, many of which have fleas, neglected teeth or infections and need medical work.
"We have about $5,700 in our budget that we spend on medical each month and we try to make that stretch as much as possible," Davis said. "(If we paid for these surgeries), it would mean we would have no money to care for any other animals."
Anyone able and willing to help can drop their donation off at the shelter at 2200 Labieux Rd., call 250-758-8444 or donate online at spca.bc.ca/nanaimo.
Davis said dental care is one of the most common things he sees pet owners neglect.
"It's just something people don't really think about," he said.
"Can you imagine what it would be like if you didn't brush your teeth for 10 years?" Because the cruelty investigation is still open, not much is known about the neglectful owner the animals were surrendered by aside from the fact that he or she lives in Nanaimo.
Davis said the person may have more animals but investigators are still looking into it.
"I don't know if this person was breeding them or not," he said.
"The dogs were pretty scared for the first few days. The cats are doing really well."
The three cats and four dogs will need homes that are able to cater to the breed's special needs once surgery is completed but applications aren't being accepted until the animal's medical needs are met. The Nanaimo SPCA has already received interest from people wanting to adopt the animals because of their breeds.
