Cabela's Canada has announced plans to establish a new location in the former Canadian Tire building located at Dickinson Crossing.
Cabela's Incorporated, headquartered in Sidney, Neb., is a leading specialty retailer and the world's largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and related outdoor merchandise.
Cabela's plans to transform its newest location in Nanaimo, which is its first in B.C., into a 50,000-square-foot store.
Construction is expected to begin next year and Cabela's anticipates to open the Nanaimo store in the fall of 2014.
Since the company's founding in 1961, Cabela's has grown to become one of the most well-known outdoor recreation brands in the world.
Currently, Cabela's operates 48 stores across North America, including four in western Canada, and plans to open an additional 19 locations over the next two years.
The Nanaimo store is expected to employ approximately 150 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, with most expected to come from Nanaimo and the surrounding area.
"As Cabela's Canada continues to expand, we knew British Columbia, and especially the Nanaimo area, would be a great fit for a Cabela's retail location," said Tommy Millner, Cabela's CEO. "The region is full of people who live the outdoor lifestyle and have supported Cabela's through our catalogue and online for many years."
Nanaimo's only Canadian Tire store is in the process of moving from its longtime location at Dickinson Crossing to a larger store at Nanaimo North Town Centre, which is approximately 30,000 square feet bigger, to meet the ever-growing needs in the city. Construction of the new 123,000-square-foot Canadian Tire store, which is adjacent to the mall, is nearly complete and the opening of is expected in the coming weeks.
The new location will include an automotive centre with 17 service bays and a 16,000-square-foot garden centre.
